Please note that this workshop was not re-approved for CEU credits by the CMTBC for Cycle 11 as they are no longer granting credits for self-care course for RMTs. However, I will be delivering this workshop in British Columbia in the late spring in 2019 and if you would like to be on the mailing list for the dates please fill in your contact information at the bottom of this page.
Please note this is not a YAMUNA® certification course, nor is it eligible to be used as a re-certification course for existing YAMUNA® practitioners. This course is designed solely for self-use for massage therapists and does not certify participants to work with clients/patients. You can expect deep, technical work, all of which you will practice on yourself; there is no partner practice in this class. However, if you choose to certify in any of YAMUNA® modalities, this class can serve as your per-requisite.
Save your Body is a two-day custom-designed workshop to meet the self-care needs of RMTs created by Beth Sampson, RMT. Healthcare practitioners tend to put their own self-care on the back burner, leading to early burnout. In this course, we explore concepts and principles of self-care and how they can be applied in daily life as well as look at common challenges that RMTs face that lead to putting self-care last. You will learn methods to relieve stress and pain in your own body, prevent injuries caused by the challenging ergonomics of massage therapy, and revitalize your energy. We will be spending time reviewing the physiology of breathing and explore how to optimize your breath throughout the day, as well as reviewing common default work ergonomics that can cause problems and seek a perspective shift on how to change this.
The majority of this workshop focuses on teaching RMTs the hands-on techniques of Yamuna® Body Rolling (YBR®) for self-use. YBR® is a comprehensive body of work of over 30 years in the making using custom-designed small balls to release and realign all aspects of the human body and was designed for individuals to be able to maintain their bodies at home without the need of an outside therapist. This makes Yamuna® Body Rolling an especially effective tool for massage therapists for self-use. This workshop teaches participants to use basic Yamuna® Body Rolling routines that have been tailored to address common pain areas and injury patterns that are endemic to RMTs, and restore proper biomechanics and work ergonomics. You will learn modified routines designed specifically for RMTs that can be done quickly and effectively throughout the day in between patients that have been tailored for this purpose.
By the end of this workshop, RMTs have a deeper understanding of their problem areas in their own bodies and walk away with tools and practical applications to treat themselves quickly and effectively. They also increase their awareness of their own faulty default biomechanics and ergonomics and how to change them. This increases their confidence, sense of well-being, can reduce “burn out”, and allows them to opportunity to maintain structural integrity in their bodies so they are able to effectively execute manual therapy techniques with their patients without incurring injuries themselves.
Beth has been an RMT since 2009 and has been a Yamuna® Practitioner/Instructor since 2003. Upon the request of her fellow RMTs she originally developed this workshop in 2010 in response to the problematic “5-year” burn out rate faced by RMTs.
